Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Introduction

 The learning and working environment in healthcare is becoming increasingly diverse. An inclusive learning and working environment where students and staff feel included and supported is important for patient safety and for the wellbeing of students, trainees and staff. This compelling session increases awareness of how individuals can be inadvertently excluded. It invites those working in healthcare to learn how to support students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon viewing the training video.

Course Description

Welcome to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for Healthcare Educators – a multi-institutional project delivered by Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), Ulster University (UU), and the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA).

The video lasts 40 minutes and the whole course should take no longer than 1 hour (including time for reflection)

This session aims to increase participants’ knowledge, confidence and skills to develop a learning and working environment that promotes equity, diversity and inclusivity for students and trainees in a healthcare environment. The training uses videoed scenarios of students’ lived experiences of exclusion to encourage participants to self-reflect on how they would deal with the issues raised in the scenarios. Advice is provided about strategies that participants can employ to challenge the exclusions shown in the videos and how to be inclusive. This is accompanied by practical advice from an International Medical Graduate (IMG) Ambassador based on their experience of supporting IMGs.

Learning objectives

1. Be able to recognise microaggressions and behaviours that are racist, sexist and heteronormative.
2. Be aware of exclusions in the hidden curriculum.
3. Apply active bystander strategies to challenge inappropriate behaviours.
4. Apply the 4 A’s for supporting students, trainees and colleagues.
5. Be aware of how to minimise unconscious biases.
6. Know how to address concerns raised.
7. Increase awareness of how to support students and trainees with reasonable adjustment
